Although born in Nex, Elsin is of Taldan descent as his parents were a pair of thieves/spies living and working in Quantium at the time of his birth. His father, an alchemist who made poisons and other agents recognized early on his son had a natural talent for the art of alchemy and so forced his wife to use her connections as a courtesan/prostitute to gain their son a spot in the prestigious Oenopion Academy.
He excelled at school and soon won accolades as an up and coming prodigy. This did not sit well with a group of students, children of local nobles who saw him as an outsider usurping the privilege reserved for them. This group through guile, deceit and outright blackmail, arranged for the death of his beloved who happened to be the daughter of one of the schools leading instructors. Evidence left at the scene framed him for the crime.
Even though the Headmaster of the Academy felt you were innocent of what you were accused, he was not in a position to shield you from the trumped up charges and the sham of a court which convicted you and sentenced you to death. You are thrown in prison and force to watch as your gallows are being built.
Then with literally only hours left to live, your former Headmaster approaches you in the middle of the night with an offer of a new life, with no questions asked. With no options, you eagerly accept. He hands you a small vial with instructions to drink it in the morning when they come to take you away, and not before. So in the morning when the guards knock on your cell door to take you away, you quickly down the concoction and you mind begins to fade out as they lead you from your cell.
When you wake up, you find yourself in the back of a rickety cart headed into the city of Solku in the western Katapesh foothills. A strange wrinkled old man who introduces himself as Amenophus states that he helped the Headmaster secret your body out of time and that you are now an “exile” from Nex. Even though “exiled”, you have vowed to return one day and make those responsible for the death of your beloved and the circumstances of your dismissal from school, denting you of the accolades you so rightly deserved.
Amenophus states doing so now will only lead to certain death, one in which he will not play a part in saving you a second time. He does say that if you follow his instructions, in time you will get your revenge. For now, you are in his service with instructions to go to Wati and find the whispering stone.
In time you make your way across Katapesh and into the hills of southern Osirion. Booking passage on a barge heading downstream on the Crook River, you make your way to Wati.
